So what would you do in his place? He's going to miss two games this weekend to observe Yom Kippur, and these are make-or-break games for the Dodgers (in terms of getting into the post season).

Jewish or not, would your religious convictions come before getting your team into the playoffs? Would you play in the Superbowl if it fell on Christmas day?

An aside, just the other day Principal Skinner was apologizing to Supt. Chalmers for denying a parent's excuse note for the kids's absence - 'It just sounded made up, I mean, Yom Kippur?'

It depends how religious he is. He does not sound like a secular Jew. This is the holiest day of the Jewish year. Sandy Koufax did not pitch in the World Series on Yom Kippur. The Dodgers aren't even in the playoffs yet.

I say good for him if he does not play. He sticks by his principles. On the other hand, if he does decide to play, I wouldn't think less of him. The important thing to me is the fasting. I don't attend services but I uphold the rest of the Day of Atonement. The big problem here is that it also falls on the Sabbath which makes it even more important to a religious Jew.

Green is damned if he does, damned if he doesn't regardless of which path he

The Super Bowl isn't going to 'fall' on Christmas Day because the people who schedule it won't schedule it for that day. Whoever does the scheduling for baseball could take into consideration various religious holidays.

weekend to

He's missing one game, tomorrow afternoon. And considering that they're playing the Giants and he's 8 for 44 against them (less than a .200 average), perhaps the Dodgers are better off.

Yom Kippur is the highest holy day in the Jewish tradition. It can't be compared to Christmas.

That wasn't really the point. How about Easter then? A clutch NBA playoff game falling on Easter Sunday.

Worked out fine for Shawn and the Dodgers, though. Well, except they lost on Saturday. But the weekend was an overall success.
