NY POST/PAGE SIX....
SOME gladiator! Russell Crowe had to be subdued by a woman after he went berserk at a party in Mexico. Crowe is starring as the fictional Capt. Jack Aubrey in 'The Far Side of the World,' the tenth in the late Patrick O’Brian’s series of 20 novels featuring Aubrey and his best friend, ship’s surgeon Stephen Maturin. Director Peter Weir has Crowe and his 'A Beautiful Mind' co-star Paul Bettany on his hands, plus salty actors he found by combing Scandinavia, Poland, Canada and Britain, plus 300 Mexican extras. They’re all at the Fox Studios Baja, where naval battles are being staged in an 8 1/2-acre tank. According to The Washington Post, 'Crowe is said to be suffering bouts of post-Oscar ego. According to press reports, he has insisted that his personal hairdresser be flown first-class from Australia once a month to care for his slightly graying locks, and he did not endear himself to the rest of the cast at the opening party by reportedly hurling another actor across a bar . . . one cast member said Crowe had to be subdued by a muscular woman friend of another actor. She got him in a hammer lock.'
