1. Will the governor of Pennsylvania ever get off the podium?

2. When will they give us details of the miners' bowel movements.

You know, I'm not a huge sentimentalist either, but even the owner of the most scar tissue-encrusted heart would have to admit that this rescue was nothing short of amazing, since, according to today's NY Times, the rescue workers weren't even certain that they were drilling in the right place, or if the men were even alive. Also, given that the mine was a scant ten miles from the horrific crash site of Flight 93, give the community a break in wanting to celebrate something positive for a change.

As for the governor, yes, he is a tad ebullient, but the guy isn't even running in November, so what's his crime, other than bearing a scarily-close resemblance to Dan Quayle?

You're missing my point. This is a FABULOUS story.

However, when the governor, especially one who lacks eloquence in public speaking, hogs the podium instead and stepping back and allowing the people who really did the rescuing to come forward, that's a problem. He felt a Giuliani-like presence was required for this accident. He was wrong. Wanna bet he'll be running for public office before long?

And when the news media covers press conferences with the doctors of miners who have already been confirmed as doing well, that's a problem. Does it really matter what's in their IV bag?

One of the guys at the press conference made a joke about if 'we were going to get paid overtime!'

Seriously though, they were technically *still* on the job when the cave-in happened......

A rumor surfaced today of a secret meeting in Somerset, Pa about two months ago between two Hollywood producers and mine union officials concerning what could be done about the Bush Administration's proposed 6% cut in mine safety administration budgets... and what kind of dramatic event was needed to change this .... a quick documentary was one option, but also discussed was the staging of a primetime rescue of 'trapped' miners... outcomes could be unstoppable public opinion to overcome legislative cutbacks, and megabucks from the eventual boxoffice bonanza.........

I called my uncle who is pretty high in PA politics and told him my theory which was similar to yours but for different reasons.

He wasn't amused.

Something didn't/doesn't sit right with me about this. Staged feeling...Somerset area...agree with the Guilani wanna be approach.

I generally don't subscribe to conspiracy theories because too many people have to keep too quiet but I think the miners could be seen as expendable.

He did everything but yell 'I LOVE MY LIFE, THEY'RE ALIVE!!!' and hang all over them as they came out of the rescue cage.

Better yet, please keep Geraldo away from anything that is news worthy. If I have to endure another show of his 'emotion' I think I'll vomit.
