Britney fans at Dubya's house? Plus: Cruise control at work; Mick Jagger's little height lie
With Ashley Pearson
July 17 - Don't be surprised if you hear strains of 'Hit Me Baby One More Time' coming from the White House. It looks like Britney Spears has fans there. Web site operator Daniel E. Rhodes set up a page devoted to the belly-baring crooner, and was stunned to see that the White House had apparently accessed the site.
IN FACT, Rhodes did some Internet sleuthing (recounted at his site), and determined that the Spears fan was located in the Executive Office, and was possibly a member of the Secret Service.
'This shocked me because if it actually is true that a Secret Service agent was surfing Britney Spears fan websites while on duty,' wrote Rhodes, 'this would mean that this Secret Service agent was probably part of the 'Presidential detail' and was obviously being a little lax on the job.'
Beats watching Bush, though.
Cruise in control
Tom Cruise's infamous Cruise Control is riling some overseas journalists. One well-known byline complained to The Scoop that while walking the red carpet at his film premieres, Cruise not only refuses to talk to print journalists, he refuses to let them lay eyes on him. 'At 'Minority Report,' print reporters were refused access when Tom walked by,' says the journalist. 'But it was even worse at the London premiere for 'Vanilla Sky,' when a group of print reporters was told to go into the bathrooms so Tom could walk by without being harassed by them. It was shocking, but many actually did.' The reporter says that Cruise schmoozes with TV reporters, and glad-hands with the fans. 'He's great to fans and they love him,' says the source. 'He spent about 90 minutes with fans at the 'Minority Report' premiere but flatly refused to deal with print reporters. There's been talk among some of us [print reporters] of boycotting his premieres, but everyone 's afraid that if we don't show, that may actually be the event where he deigns to speak with us.' Cruise's spokeswoman flatly denies the story. 'There is print press sprinkled throughout the press line/red carpet at all the premieres,' says spokeswoman Pat Kingsley. 'Tom talks to each group as he goes by. There is no policy to exclude any one group.' When asked if reporters were asked to hide in the loo, Kingsley said, 'No such thing was ever done.'
Notes from all over
It seems that Eric Roberts shares sister Julia's soft spot for mistreated animals. While Julia has rescued pet dogs from the pound, her brother Eric Roberts is the proud new owner of a mistreated Russian bear. Eric Roberts spotted the animal in a cage at a restaurant while attending the Kinotavr movie festival in Sochi, Russia. 'There was nothing surprising about Roberts' decision: people who saw the bear could only feel sorry for it: it was running around the cage, growling lamentably, and looking at people with very sad eyes, as if asking for help,' reports Pravda. 'Roberts decided to buy the animal and take it to America, where the bear would have very good conditions for living, as Eric promised.' Roberts' office didn't return The Scoop's phone calls inquiring into what he intends to do with the beast. . . . Mick Jagger apparently has been telling tall tales about his height. The wrinkly rocker's Web site says he's 5 foot 10 1/2 , but according to the Daily Mail, he's actually 5 foot 8. . . At Madonna's final performance of 'Up For Grabs,' the applause from the star-studded audience grew so loud that the aspiring thespian had difficulty being heard. So, according to accounts on various fan sites, Madonna broke character and shouted at the crowd , 'Can I get on with the f
