Heh... I have diabetes too...mine is now controlled with diet alone. On a professional note, I've had patients with blood sugars as high as 1300... a level I didn't think was even compatible with life. I don't remember any of them being in a coma for a week. A day or so at the most... generally less than a day.

But she majored in drama in school, didn't she?

My neighbor up in Michigan was diagnosed 5 years ago. She took the daily insulin shots for about a year, then her doctor took her *off* it, saying that her diabetes could be controlled with diet and exercise. She's doing great!

Can't wait for next week's press release: 'How diabetes and the ex who used to beat me keep me from finding a man!!!'

Halle, do interesting, non-trashy work and you won't need to employ eighty publicists.

Go, ahead. I'll meet you there. I was diagnosed in June as a type 2. Since then, I've lost 20 lbs and my numbers are non diabetic, although I am still diabetic. Be warned though. You think the infighting is tough here sometimes, alt.support.diabetes is a battle royal at times. There has been a recent call for cessation of hostilities, with mixed results.

The US should be fighting a war on Diabetes as opposed to Bush's phoney war on a boogey man terrorist.

What's the story on stem cell research curing diabetes? I don't have a problem with doctors using stem cells from embryos left over from fertility treatments and due to be destroyed anyway. People who are against stem cell research don't know anyone with diabetes, Parkinsons disease, Alzheimers or a spinal cord injury. An article a few months back stated diabetes would likely be one of the first diseases cured by stem cell research because it's a relatively simple disease - they just have to jumpstart the pancreas - as compared to Alzheimers which is a lot trickier.

You have a bunch of folks who believe that life begins at conception. They're holding things up in this country. However, they don't have didley to say about research in other countries. When the cure is found, the technology is gonna belong to someone else.

Nor do I. Personally, I don't think life begins until you're born. Until then, you're just Maybe-Baby. I just can't picture a bunch of fertilized eggs in a petri dish being the same as a baby. Babies at least breath.

Sure they do. We all know somebody with diabetes. We just don't know that we do. When I first got into nursing, diabetic patients were the exception rather than the rule. Now almost a third of all my patients happen to have diabetes amongst their various problems.

I look forward to the day as I have diabetes also. But there's a pile of diseases that stem cell research can probably help: MS, Lou Gehrig's disease, the list goes on and on....

their various >problems.

Mort, has there been any research done with the links to diabetes and predisposition to cancer? I am involved with an organisation called the Wellness Community and a lot of people who have various forms of cancer also have diabetes. It really surprised me, and it's evenly spread across the board (breast, prostate, colon, etc.) Do you see this at your hospital?
