I'm thinking that maybe he's saving his 'big guns' for the later rounds, knowing that, with the girl vote, he'll just sail into the final 12.

I'd vote for the second. I thought maybe he had potential with 'Father Figure' which is a good song, but then he picked two of the worst songs he could ever pick, and throughly proved that he is the next Boy Band Idol or cheesy wedding singer. But he'll survive like Cher or Joan Rivers to haunt us another day.
