I was amused at Ace trying to get the guys from Queen to rearrange their song for him. Seriously, how many people would have the balls to go up to Queen and tell them to play their song differently? If it was up to me I'd kick him off just for that. He was like 'no, no, do it more like the Backstreet Boys...'.

He's an idiot. A lot of (uninformed) people seem to think that Queen was out of line for blowing him off the way they did. They're wrong. Queen was selling out stadiums before Ace was a twinkle in his father's eye. They are one of the most successful acts in the industry and they have been writing and performing the material for nearly 30 years. For Ace to walk in there and request that they alter the song to fit him was both insolent and arrogant. Musically, who is Ace? Nobody, that's who. It isn't Queen's job to alter their music for anyone, especially some green yahoo who suffers from a severe lack of both talent and tact. What he did was extremely presumptuous and showed a lack of respect for Queen's music. He's fortunate that Brian May is a genuinely nice person. There many other equally talented and tenured musicians who would have told Ace to either the shut the hell up or get the hell out.

He did construction before this show, right? In keeping with the theme, we're just waiting for the hammer to fall.

His ousting is well deserved. Tonight isn't soon enough.

I'm not a fan of Ace either, but I'm on Ace's side on this issue. 'It's the singer not the song that keeps the music moving along': Ace had every right to request that changes be made because it's his future on the line not Queen's. It was, after all, a workshop. And perhaps at that time, Ace was unaware that the AI band would have made the appropriate changes anyway.

That we can agree on.

Those 'rehearsing with the stars' segments always seem made-for-TV to me, with little real learning involved.

No really? Ofcourse they are made for tv. It is tv for god sake.

is their show. Barry Manilow even admitted that Mandisa's arrangement was better than his.

Completely different situation. Barry Manilow was there specifically to help them with their arrangements (it seemed to be something he enjoyed doing). It seems like this was arranged to give them a chance to meet and sing with Queen, they worked on the arrangements later (the video with the keyboardist, for example).

Barry Manilow was not playing an instrument, and they were not singing Barry Manilow songs, they were singing fifties songs. It's not like Barry was playing 'Mandy' on piano for them and someone was trying to tell him 'no, play it like this'. That would be pretty presumptuous. Anyway, Queen is a band, and bands tend to have their songs all arranged the way they like them.

While I can appreciate attempts to reinterpret a song, there's a big difference between a real musician nailing the rock edge of the song in the beginning, then switching it up to give it a modern twist and Ace, who clearly just wanted them to play it in a style that he was comfortable with. Telling them that a 'military beat' will help him get into the song wouldn't sit well with most songwriters.

It's like the difference between a singer who riffs around a note for effect and one who does it because they can't find the note. You can spot it every time.
